Fruit, 61-63 Humber Street, Hull
Client: Fruit Market LLP
Project Manager: LHL Group Limited
Contract: Refurbishment and extension of 61-63 Humber Street
Approximate Value: £1.1m
A very challenging project taken on by Voase Builders, to refurbish and extend 61-63 Humber Street (formerly known as FRUIT), which sits in the centre of Humber Street in Hull.
The works briefly comprised the full strip out internally, and fit out internally of the 1st and 2nd floor for new tenant spaces, creation of new music venue and gallery space on the ground floor. The main building structure was bolstered with the introduction of new columns and beams internally sat on piled foundations.
The ground floor also required extensive propping to form a new opening in the rear of the existing building. Being a music venue the desire was to minimise columns blocking views of the stage area at the rear, resulting in 900 deep steel beams spanning 11m along over the new opening through the rear wall. The added challenge was supporting the existing building while the piled foundations for the new supporting columns either side were installed.
The extension comprised piling to 16m and forming new raft foundation, steel frame structure, with blockwork external walls. To achieve the architects desired unique shape the external of the building wall was framed out using specially made trusses, fixed vertically to the building, then framed out and clad using over 5,000m of cedar boarding.
